      FROM THE HISTORICAL RECORD

In 1833, commercial winemaking began in Los Angeles, when Jean-Louis Vignes built his winery around a 400-year old tree near today's Union Station.

L.A. was once the epicenter of winemaking not just of California, but the United States -- producing beautiful wines well before Napa and Sonoma.

Before there were oranges, there were grapes in Orange County. By the turn of the 19th Century, it was a celebrated wine growing region in the nation.
